A waterfall worth making time for
Feel the rush of Goðafoss, then come home to the quiet of the valley. This sweeping waterfall on the Skjálfandafljót river makes a memorable outing from Lundskógar, with Lake Mývatn further east for a day of changing landscapes.
The water spreads across a curved rim before dropping into the river below. Follow the designated paths to the viewpoints and pause to enjoy the sound and movement. This is a place to put the camera down for a moment, too.
Head towards Goðafoss on the Ring Road east of the valley. You can make the waterfall your main outing and return for an afternoon at the house, or continue east towards Mývatn. Choose the length of the day around your group and the conditions.
For a fuller day, pair Goðafoss with a walk among the lava formations at Dimmuborgir near Lake Mývatn. Leave room for lunch and a few unplanned stops. Keeping one house as your base means you can enjoy the day without packing up again.
Bring sturdy shoes and a weatherproof layer, stay on the marked paths and follow any closures at the viewpoints. Spray and ice can make surfaces slippery. Check the road and weather conditions before you leave.
At Lundskógar, swap your walking shoes for a robe and settle into the hot tub. The river below the house offers a quieter finish to a day spent beside one of the north’s great waterfalls.
